Marley and Me

The only thing cuter than a puppy...

....is a little boy pretending to be a puppy. In September, I stopped at the City of Excellence magnet school in Aventura, Florida, right outside Miami. I spoke to the students about my children's books, BAD DOG, MARLEY and MARLEY: A DOG LIKE NO OTHER, then I signed books. Flash forward two months: Yesterday, these photos were forwarded to me by my editor. One of the little boys in line to have his Marley book signed was inspired enough to dress up as puppy Marley on his first night home for the school's annual costume contest. I know the boy only as Bobby, but I sure hope he won the contest. I got a big kick out of how faithfully he (with a little help from Mom, no doubt) recreated the Whirlpool box in which Marley spent his first night before I relented and brought him inside to sleep beside my bed. (You can see the photo of Marley on his first night home at the "Marley photos" link on the marleyandme.com home page.)
I love this photo because it reminds me of all the great kids I met on my children's books tour -- and of the guileless way in which they accepted Marley into their lives.
The photos show Bobby doing his best Marley imitation in his box, and earlier, having his book signed by me at his school outside Miami.

Hi John,
I'm half way thro' reading 'Marley and Me'. Let me say its touched both my husband and I, brought laughter and tears too.We have a 'Marley'- 6 year old Bobby, he even looks like him. Let me say the expression 'Dog is Man's best friend' is really put into perspective in the book.Good luck and best wishes. I write this with Bobby's nose poking over my knee!

Thank you for Marley and Me, I'm only a few chapters into it but already I have counted numerous incidents that reminded me of Tige, my yellow labrador. Tige is long gone now but will remain in my memory for ever! Once again thank you
Dear John,
My wife is the biggest fan of your book and needless to say, the biggest dog lover.
I am sorry to have to put this request through the blog but I don't know of any other way to reach you.
To cut a long story short, my wife has somehow lost her autographed copy of Marley and Me during a house move recently, and she is devastated. We live way out in Singapore, and she got that autographed copy as a gift. I know it was the next most precious thing to her after our dog Sheri.
Sir, please know that I love my wife very much and would very much like to cheer her up by replacing her copy. Please please tell me how I can obtain your autograph on a new copy of Marley and Me? I am more than happy to pay for postage, book, admin fees, etc, etc, whatever it costs, please just let me know. I will be eternally grateful.
I can be reached at cj_chong@yahoo.com.
Many thanks for your kind consideration, and I wish you well.
Regards,
CJ
That picture was adorable. I really don't know if this is where to send you a comment, but the message board is down until March and I would certainly appreciate some input. My Yellow Lab, Harley (I wanted to name him Barley because of his coloring, but I was out voted because it sounded like a "sissy" name) My husband owns a Harley motorcycle that he loves so he and our four children thought that would be "cool." Our children range from ages 21-13. Two finishing college, one in high school and one finishing middle school. Harley has been with them all these years. He will be 11 years old next month. I read Marley and Me in 2005 and just finished Marley: A Dog Like No Other, last night. In '05, like eveyone else, I laughed and cried while reading, but this one really hit home. Harley is now suffering from all the sympthoms Marley did in old age. I am the one he follows all over the place. His problem is getting down the stairs, not up them. He will cry and whine but will keep following me even if it is only to get a book upstairs. He too must sleep along side my bed. The hair balls are all over the place and impossible to clean. I know his time with us in this world is drawing near, but I can't let go. Do you really feel he will let me know when it is his time? He truly is the best dog ever. So many parts of your books I can relate to. The miscarrage was especially poignant (two for me and Harley licked me through it). Also, He has helped me so much with the death of loved ones, and more importantly, his excitable greetings make my 87 year old mother know she is missed when she comes over. I keep asking Harley not to ever die. Here I am a 48 year old, professional woman and mother, and I sound like a two year old. Just tell me how will I know when Harley has had enough? Like Marley, each time I think,"this is it" he turns back into a puppy, overturning garbage pails to eat last nignt's dinner or grabbing a loaf of bread off the kitchen counter and playing, "Come and get it, if you dare!" Thank you for your beautiful books (I'm halfway through Bad Dogs Have More Fun. Your eloquent words convey how so many feel about their dogs.

I decided to leave a comment because i wanted to convey to you that your words have truely touched people... which is obviously somethin that you must hear alot but i wanted to say it to you... as im writing this my marley, Toby a springer spaniel is snooring beside the fire... with the odd bum burp, as my sister calls them. i cried and laughed at your book and have bought it for birthday presents, moving in presents and nearly every other present that you can think of because i believe that this book touches peoples hearts and lives...My siter, (who discovered marley before me!) still talk about the book as if we knew your family and your experiences you had with Marley.
I just want to Thank you again for brightening up my days with you tales of Marley!!
Dear Mr. Grogan,
Thank you so much for Marley and Me. I am now reading it for the second time, followed by the same laughs and tears. I know you have heard this a thousand times, but Marley reminds me of my 120 pound yellow lab, named Skyler. I am currently reading the young readers version of Marley to my third grade class. The children absolutely love the stories of Marley. Your book has truely touched my heart! Thank you on behalf of a wife, mother to many dogs, woman, and teacher.
