A Work in Progress

Last summer, Cesar Milan and his crew from National Geographic Channel's "The Dog Whisperer" came to our house in Pennslvania to help us curb our Lab Gracie's appetite for our backyard chickens. She was positively obsessed by them, and had killed two of them. Cesar showed us techniques to desensitive her to the birds and redirect her hunting instincts into a more acceptable outlet, such as fetching balls. (Yeah right, Gracie seems to say...Like I'm supposed to find a tennis ball a satisfactory substitute for a plump feathered pullet.)
Well, here's Gracie eight months later, still working on her chicken tolerance skills, but making progress. As you can see, at least she's sitting calmly, and not hopping around, barking and carrying on as she would have been nine months ago.
Tomorrow (Monday, May 14) I head to Nashville and Memphis for a few days on the third leg of my book tour for "Bad Dog, Marley!" and "Marley: A Dog Like No Other." If you are in the area, please stop by and say hello!

I can not stop crying. It has been 3 hours since I finished your book. It was then I had to look you up to first say Thank You, Thank You, Thank You. But now why cant I stop crying???? Factoring out PMS & Menopause It has got to be the huge love for my own four legged friend. He, who has been with me from three months, is now 12 ½ years old. Each week that passes, I notice him to be stiffer and grayer. It is not his personality that is changing. No he can’t hear me is all.
There is little in this book I have not experienced my self (thankfully not the lightning) with this dog or his predecessor. We too could not use the watery grave. Does this happen so often? The scouting to check the grave undisturbed. The biggest rocks to place on top. So on and so on.
It makes us feel good, I do believe. As a community of dog lovers to know we might feel alone in our love or grief, our struggles our challenges, but that we are not very different at all. How fast we bond in the posts rooms. How fast to share our stories. How I have passed this book on to my family and friends. Only because it is of our beloved dogs.
Thank You, Thank You, Thank You again….for sharing your gift of your story…with me and all.
Sincerely
Wendy A. Hobart

Did the NGC ever air the episode of Gracie? I'd love to see it!
BTW, I just finished your book....just like many other readers (and dog lovers), I cried during the last 5 chapters. At times, uncontrollably! We have a 6 month old black lab mix rescue, and I found myself laughing out loud while reading because Marley's antics reminded me of my pup! Most non-dog owners just can't understand the love and companionship we share with our dogs. When I finished the book, I hugged and kissed my puppy for about 15 minutes straight! I saw you on TV promoting the new books - my MIL is going to get the one for young readers for my 10 year old son.
Hello, John! My name is Camila and I am Brazilian.
I'm worried if you will understand what I'll say.
I don't speak English very well,
therefore I will be brief.
I just want to say that I loved the book.
I laugh and cried many times during the reading.
Marley remembers my dog to me, whose name is Brida.
I will always comment that will be able.
Say Hello to Jenny and kids. :)
I love them too!
Bye!
John, I just got my daughter your new book "Marley: A dog like no other." She LOVES it. She lost her two best friends last year -- and yellow and black lab. Since I loved your book, I thought it would be great to share.
We did just get two new doggies -- 2 yellows- Diesel and Ripley -

Congrats on your new books!!
Hi, Mr. Grogan! It was great to meet you at the signing in Memphis. Thanks so much for coming!
I blogged about the experience and posted the photo my mom took of us here:

I love Marley and Me. Cried and Laughed and Cried and Laughed some more. It was awesome. I got my son Bad Dog Marley, and he LOVES it! Except I cant say Baby Louie, I have to say baby Matthew (my sons name). Because he wants to be in the book! lol. I had a dog for 13 years and she finally got run over by a car and died in my fathers arms, the worst day of my life.
Before hopping on a plane ride home this morning my dad presented me wth my birthday gift, "Marley and Me". I read almost the entire book during my very long flight and there were times I literally could not stop laughing. (My fellow passengers must have thought I was nuts, because I just kept bursting out laughing!)
My dad gave me the book because of my own dog. My husband and I own a one year old golden retriever who is a complete and total SPAZ. I love him to death, but what a peice of work he is. I'm constantly fishing household items from his mouth, he tears everything to shreds, jumps on everyone, lunges joyfully ay other dogs, and is a ball of joy and energy that I can hardly contain. Reading about your own experiences was not only familiar, but strangely encouraging.
I haven't yet read the end of the book but I sense I'm approaching a sad ending. When I arrived home from my flight Jed (my spaztic dog) greeted me with the unbridled enthusiasm of something akin to a dog on crack. You gotta love them; even with their quirks. Thanks for sharing your well written story!
Hello John! My name is Daniel and is here of Brazil. I adored the book “Marley and” and wait ancioso to read its other books. Before more nothing I ask for excuses for the perfectly bad English, these translators on-line are horrible! The book has an excellent reading and involves any one that to read. I particularly it devorei in three days! Unhappyly I will not be for close to Menphis these days… will be in August who knows… greetings and congratulations!
Daniel Umbelino.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for writing such a wonderful book. It made me value and cherish every moment even more so with my beautiful lab. During the final sad chapter, i was crying uncontrollably, all the while, my lab slept on the end of my bed. he must have sensed something was wrong because he came over to me and started licking my hands.
Your book bought out the best and worst a faithful dog has to offer. Thanks again.
Hi John! I'm from Brazil, and during the past 2 months I've seen your book on the list of best-selling books here in Brazil. So I got interested and bought it.
I can really tell you that I cried for the very first time while reading a book. The story is fanstastic, and although I've never been in a similar situation, it was so beautiful!
Grace looks really cute on the picture. Best of luck.
