What's that Buzzing Sound?

When I was at the Great Lakes Booksellers Association show in Chicago over the weekend (scroll down to see my account of good readings and bad nightlife), I briefly met a reporter from Publisher's Weekly who was there to cover the event. She was your typical hardbitten, jaded reporter who doesn't get excited about much of anything (I know the type; I am one). She was faithfully doing her job, going from booth to booth and event to event talking to the booksellers, trying to gauge what upcoming releases were ringing their bells.

Her report came out in today's Publisher's Weekly. The part pertaining to Marley & Me states:

"Surprises abounded on the show floor as well. A book that created lots of buzz was a new release about a man and his dog, Marley & Me by Philadelphia Inquirer columnist John Grogan. Many booksellers said Marley (nicknamed 'Tuesdays with Marley' by HarperCollins reps) would be a handselling favorite this holiday season. Reps couldn't give away copies fast enough to eager booksellers: 200 copies were handed out by noon Saturday, 300 total were handed out by the end of the show."

So, that's how many books we gave away. I was wondering. It seemed like I signed a whole lot. As I said in an earlier entry below, the booksellers sure seemed enthusiastic, but I wondered if they were just being nice to me. Of course, you say positive things to an author's face, right? It's good to know they were talking about the book when I wasn't around, as well. And that a reporter was listening. Buzz is such an elusive, fleeting thing. Here's hoping it will still be here tomorrow.
